I sometimes joke that my brain is like a dodgy news channel — broadcasting an endless loop of “what could go wrong” stories, dramatic forecasts, and existential commentary I never asked for. If there were a remote control for the human mind, mine would permanently hover over Breaking Anxiety News.
And I know I’m not alone.
Some people seem blessed with sunny, buoyant minds that drift through life as if wrapped in a gentle bubble of optimism. They stub their toe and shrug it off; they lose their job and somehow see it as “the universe redirecting them.” Then there are others — like me, and perhaps like you — whose thoughts can veer dark without much encouragement. Death, loss, sadness, meaninglessness — our mental playlist seems permanently tuned to “melancholy FM.”
So why do some brains insist on wandering to the dark side? And more importantly, how do we bring them back?
🧠 The Evolutionary Bias Toward Doom
Let’s start with the science.
Humans evolved to survive, not to be happy. For our ancestors, constant vigilance was a useful skill — it kept them alive. If you missed the beauty of a sunset, no big deal. If you missed the rustle of a predator, game over.
That built-in alert system is called the negativity bias — our brain’s tendency to notice, remember, and dwell on negative experiences more than positive ones. In a landmark paper, Baumeister et al. (2001) summed it up neatly: “Bad is stronger than good.”
The amygdala — the small, almond-shaped structure deep in the brain — is partly to blame. It acts like an overzealous alarm system, scanning constantly for threat or danger. Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux’s research (1998) showed that the amygdala responds to potential threats before we consciously register them. It’s like having a personal bodyguard who tackles everyone that walks through the door — helpful sometimes, but mostly exhausting.
That might explain why some people fixate on death or worst-case scenarios: their internal bodyguard is simply too good at its job.
⚙️ The Brain That Over-Remembers Pain
To make matters trickier, our brains store negative emotional memories more vividly. Studies have found that the hippocampus, which encodes memory, interacts closely with the amygdala. Emotional arousal strengthens memory consolidation — meaning painful or frightening events leave a deeper mark.
This is why, even years later, your brain can replay a breakup, an argument, or a moment of embarrassment in high-definition clarity — yet struggle to recall the good parts of your last holiday.
It’s not that your brain is cruel. It’s just biased toward remembering the lessons that might help you survive next time. Unfortunately, in the modern world, survival threats look less like saber-toothed tigers and more like unpaid bills, rejection emails, or the creeping awareness that we’ll all die someday.
💭 When Darkness Becomes a Habit
The more often you think about something, the easier it becomes to think about it again. This is the nature of neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to strengthen neural connections through repetition.
So if you’ve spent years ruminating — turning over sad, fearful, or morbid thoughts — your brain essentially becomes good at it. Those neural pathways get stronger, faster, and more automatic. Like a well-worn footpath in the forest, your thoughts default to the familiar route, even if it’s miserable.
It’s not that you choose to think negatively — it’s that your brain has become conditioned to it.
Rumination, according to research by Nolen-Hoeksema (1991), is one of the strongest predictors of depression and anxiety. It creates a feedback loop: the more you think about distressing things, the worse you feel, which in turn makes you think about them more.
The mind loves familiarity — even if that familiarity hurts.
🧩 The Role of Personality and Temperament
Some people are simply wired to feel deeply. Those high in the personality trait neuroticism (a tendency toward emotional sensitivity) or openness to experience (curiosity and introspection) are more likely to reflect on heavy existential topics.
These individuals are often empathetic, intuitive, and insightful — but they also pay a price for that depth. Their mental “volume knob” for emotion is turned up a few notches.
Existential psychologists like Viktor Frankl and Irvin Yalom have long argued that awareness of death is part of what makes us human. When we confront mortality, we’re forced to ask: What truly matters? Am I living fully? What gives my life meaning?
So, if your mind wanders toward questions of mortality, it doesn’t mean you’re broken. It may mean you’re awake — attuned to the fragility of life in a way that, while painful, also holds the potential for meaning.
⚡ When Biology Adds Fuel to the Fire
While temperament and experience shape our thought patterns, there’s also a biological dimension.
Neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine play major roles in regulating mood and focus. Imbalances can tilt the brain toward sadness, anxiety, or rumination. Chronic stress increases cortisol, which shrinks connections in the prefrontal cortex (responsible for reasoning) while strengthening the amygdala.
This means under stress, the rational part of your brain literally loses influence, while the alarm system gains it. You become reactive, anxious, and prone to seeing danger where none exists.
That’s why telling someone who’s anxious to “just think positive” rarely helps. It’s not a moral weakness — it’s a temporary chemical imbalance, a nervous system out of tune.
🔁 My Brain, the Overthinker
For most of my twenties, I lived with a brain that refused to switch off. It didn’t just overthink — it hyper-analyzed. A passing comment could send me spiralling for days. If I felt physically unwell, my mind leapt straight to catastrophic conclusions. And when things were calm, I’d invent new worries just to stay busy.
The most exhausting part was how convincing those thoughts felt. They arrived with a sense of urgency — “You need to think about this now!” — and they always sounded factual.
At the time, I didn’t know much about mindfulness or cognitive-behavioural techniques. I just knew I was tired of living in a mental storm.
🌤️ The Turning Point: Discovering Mindfulness
Then, almost by accident, I stumbled into mindfulness.
I’d read about it countless times — usually dismissed it as something monks did on mountains while I struggled to meet deadlines. But during one particularly anxious phase, I downloaded a mindfulness app out of sheer desperation.
The first exercise asked me to sit still for five minutes and focus on my breath. Within thirty seconds, my mind wandered. Within sixty, it had written an imaginary screenplay about my own failure.
But something shifted when I heard the teacher’s voice say, “When your mind wanders, that’s not failure — that’s the practice.”
That was the first time I realised my thoughts were not me.

Mindfulness isn’t about “clearing your mind.” It’s about noticing your thoughts without getting dragged into them — like watching clouds drift across the sky instead of jumping on each one.
Over weeks of daily practice (and a lot of frustration), I began noticing the patterns of my mind. Certain thoughts appeared like old friends: You’ll mess this up. People don’t really like you. Something bad is going to happen.
But instead of fighting them, I started labelling them gently: “Ah, there’s that anxious story again.”
That tiny gap — the moment of observation — was life-changing.
Neuroscience backs this up. Studies by Hölzel et al. (2011) found that mindfulness practice reduces amygdala activity and increases gray matter density in areas related to emotion regulation and perspective-taking. In other words, mindfulness literally strengthens the brain’s capacity to step back and self-soothe.
Mindfulness teaches your brain that a thought is just a thought — not an emergency.
💬 Cognitive Thought-Challenging: From Catastrophe to Clarity
Alongside mindfulness, I learned another crucial skill: thought challenging, a core technique from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
The principle is simple but powerful. When a distressing thought arises — I’ll never get through this, everyone will leave me, I’m doomed — you pause and test it like a scientist:

I began keeping a small notebook where I’d write down my “doom thoughts” and challenge them in real time. It felt awkward at first — like arguing with an invisible lawyer in my own head — but over time, I noticed a change.
My mind still wandered to dark places, but it didn’t stay there as long.
🧠 Reality-Checking the Brain’s Drama
One of the most useful questions I started asking myself was:
“Will this matter two years from now?”
This simple question is a cognitive handbrake. It snaps you out of tunnel vision and into perspective.
Most of the things that consumed me — a critical comment, a missed opportunity, an awkward silence — completely faded with time. What felt huge in the moment was barely a blip in hindsight.
By asking that question, I learned to rank my worries. Was it a true existential crisis or just another Tuesday meltdown? The answer, more often than not, was the latter.

In plain English: what you focus on grows.
If you focus on loss, you’ll see more loss. If you focus on gratitude, you’ll see more abundance. Not because you’re magically manifesting it, but because your brain literally filters reality through the lens you choose.
Visualisation — another underrated skill — builds on this. By picturing ourselves calm, grounded, and safe, we train the nervous system to relax. The brain can’t fully distinguish between imagined and real experiences; rehearsing peace helps us embody it.
So when I catch myself drifting into dark thoughts now, I visualise a calm version of myself two years in the future — the one who’s already survived whatever I’m worrying about. That image acts like a lighthouse in mental fog.
🌿 Simplicity: The Unsung Hero of Mental Health
When the mind is noisy, simplicity is salvation.
These days, I make a conscious effort to strip things back — fewer commitments, fewer screens, fewer “shoulds.” Overthinking thrives on overstimulation. Simplicity isn’t boring; it’s stabilising.
I’ve found solace in small rituals: a morning walk, a proper meal without my phone, a few deep breaths before starting work. It’s astonishing how grounding the basics can be when your mind wants to philosophise about death at 3 a.m.
It’s not that the dark thoughts vanish — they just stop feeling so heavy.
🪞 Reality Check: Everyone Has a Dark Side
Even the most upbeat people you know have moments of despair, fear, or morbid curiosity. The difference is, they don’t always believe their thoughts. They let them come and go.
It’s human to think about death, loss, or sadness — but getting stuck there doesn’t serve us. We can learn to coexist with those thoughts without letting them define our mood or identity.
When I stopped fighting my “dark” thoughts and instead got curious about them — Why is this coming up now? What is this thought trying to protect me from? — they started losing power.
Compassion is the antidote to rumination. You can’t bully yourself out of anxiety, but you can breathe, observe, and choose differently.

We can’t control every thought, but we can choose where we rest our attention. And with practice, patience, and a bit of humour, even the darkest brain can learn to step into the light.
