Depression is a serious condition that has affected more than 300 million people worldwide. Each day, hundreds of thousands of individuals are diagnosed with this mood disorder. Individuals with this mental disorder are often sad and have no interest in socializing or performing general activities. Depression can lead to several adverse effects, including insomnia, loss of appetite, weakness, fatigue, poor concentration, and other underlying health problems.   • Anxious Distress: Being in a state of anxiety and distress can trigger this type of depression. Almost everyone encounters this condition now and then.
  • Mixed Features: A person may have more than one of the features discussed above, which may increase complications in treatment.

Depression doesn’t solely hinge on feelings, seasons, and other elements. Other factors, such as disorders, can trigger this mental condition, including Bipolar I and II, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, cyclothymic disorder, persistent depressive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and others.

Understanding the Levels of Depression

When analysing depression, individuals have levels that are mild, moderate or severe, depending on the underlying factors.

Mild Depression

Everyone experiences this mental condition at some point. It is less complicated and disappears after a while. Additionally, it may come with feelings of anger, despair, demotivation, weight loss or gain, insomnia, and many more. Although not serious, people with this experience must take action to eradicate it.

Treating Mild Depression

A certified health practitioner may recommend waiting for a period to monitor the condition’s outcome, mostly around two weeks. Another way to get rid of depression is to exercise, including walking, running, swimming, and jogging. It takes the mind off factors that may sustain the condition’s presence. Moderate Depression

Often, moderate depression stems from the mild phase. At this point, the individual experiences prolonged mood swings with no signs of improvement. When that happens, such a person must seek professional help. Some therapists specialize in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and are willing to help the person get better.

Severe Depression

This type of depression endangers the victim’s wellbeing. People who suffer from this level of condition tend to entertain suicidal thoughts. Hence, this mental disorder requires immediate medical attention.

Treating Severe Depression

There are several ways to treat this type of condition, including the following:

  • Psychological Treatment Programs: People who battle severe depression may have to see a team of medical professions, comprising psychotherapists, psychiatrists, specialist nurses, and occupational therapists. They provide various treatment programs that will help alleviate the condition gradually, including the use of online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and psychotherapy.
  • Antidepressants Treatment: Medical specialists may recommend the use of antidepressants to treat this condition.

Other times, such medical experts may combine both options to treat a patient battling severe depression.

Medications Used to Treat Depression

As discussed before, health experts use antidepressants to treat depression, especially when it’s in its severe form. It is worth stating that these drugs differ from one another, even though they produce similar effects. In other words, their chemical structures and adverse effects vary. Here are types of antidepressants:

  • Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs): These types of inhibitors focuses on serotonin and noradrenaline and targets brain chemicals directly linked to an individual’s mood. They include duloxetine, venlafaxine, and desvenlafaxine, just to mention a few.
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): Often, these are most health experts’ go-to medication for the treatment of depression. They come with few side effects. Such medications include citalopram, paroxetine, vilazodone, and escitalopram.
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants: These medications have been in existence for a long time, and target the noradrenaline and serotonin. However, they have severe adverse effects. Such medications include doxepin, imipramine, trimipramine, and protriptyline.
  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Such antidepressants prolong the activities of noradrenaline and serotonin in the brain. Medical experts prescribe them when other inhibitors have failed to provide treatment. However, it is advised that individuals using these medications abstain from specific foods, including pickles, wine, and even targeted medications, like SSRIs. Examples of these inhibitors include tranylcypromine, phenelzine, isocarboxazid, and selegiline.

Lifestyle Modification in Treating Depression

An individual’s lifestyle plays an essential role in the development of specific moods. For example, staying indoors alone for a prolonged period can cause one to feel lonely, which may set an environment for depression. Often, the solution for this condition is to change one’s routine; this will speed up the healing process. Here are some ways to treat depression:

  • Limit exposure to stress. It is essential to identify elements that may build up stress in the body; this may stem from hectic work activities, unhealthy relationships, financial strains, and many more. Once identified, the individual must take measures to reduce such exposures.
  • Maintain a healthy dietary plan. Meals contribute to an individual’s overall health. Feeding off unhealthy food can affect hormonal balance, which, in turn, may cause a shift in one’s mood. Focus on meals that increase energy levels.
  • Exercise regularly. Being a couch potato can reduce the activities of serotonin, endorphins, and other chemicals. As such, depression may set in overtime. Hence, it is essential to take on activities that increase metabolism in the body. These may include swimming, running, and even dancing.
  • Socialize often. One of the reasons people get depressed is that they don’t mingle with others. In most cases, these individuals are caught up in their little world, forgetting one of the essences of living, which is socialization. As the popular saying goes, no man is an island.
  • Get enough rest. Lack of sleep can lead to complications, like insomnia. This factor affects a person’s mood, especially during the early hours of the day. Symptoms like irritability and moodiness tend to occur. To avoid such situations, it is advisable to maintain a healthy sleep pattern.

In summary, depression is a mental condition that goes away when treated on time and with the right procedures.
