Personal responsibility – where has it gone?

Personal Responsibility

… no one can ever save someone else, you know? We can only save ourselves. You know that, don’t you?Carrie Jones,

There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you.
J.K. Rowling

I’m not sure what’s going on but it is worrying when I hear on the news that the Government is considering taxing sugary food and drink to promote healthier living. This is just one example of recent possible adjustments to the law to make us conform. Whatever happened to personal responsibility and being accountable for your own choices?

As adults, we are all ultimately responsible for our decisions in life. When I worked at the National Probation Service, I remember asking a male offender whether it would be okay to hit a woman that provoked him and made him angry. He replied with conviction that she would definitely deserve to be hit as it would be her fault for annoying him. It took me quite a while to get him to understand that even though she may not be acting correctly, he was still responsible for his reaction to her. He had a choice to walk away from her instead of physically lash out.

You are in your current situation, living the life you have now from choices you have made in the past. Every past choice and decision has led you to the point you’re at now. Playing the victim or blaming others for your circumstances is an easy way out but it also robs you of your power to change things.

Choose today to take personal responsibility for your life. Make decisions and live with the consequences. It can be scary but it is also very empowering. This is your life to lead, make the most of it and be brave enough to  live with the future that unfolds…
