Older student starting university

Forty four years old and I’m a student again. I attended the induction yesterday and met the other people that I’ll will be doing the course with – specializing in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I was pleased to see that I wasn’t the oldest student out of the 28 attendees – 6 men and 22 females in total.  The usual fears and doubts crept in –  have I made the right decision. Will I cope with all the scrutiny of my ability as a counsellor? Will the feedback crush my confidence and result in me doubting my capabilities?

All new situations that take us out of our comfort zones will trigger doubts and insecurities. I know from years of counselling that I need to manage the stray negative thoughts  and keep reasonable thinking whilst maintaining perspective.

My current strategy is to take things one day at a time and not worry too much about future parts of the course (like role plays and my practical placement). The power is in the moment and I have no control over future events that have not yet arrived.

I am looking forward to mixing with other professionals and getting to know new people as well as learn new skills. Nerve wracking but exciting too!
