Mother’s Day: A super-thoughtful way to say it with flowers – with a difference – on Sunday 10th March

greeting cards

Sunday March 10th is Mother’s Day and a traditional gift of flowers is bound to bring a smile to your mum’s face. But if you want something longer-lasting and different to the usual bunch, bought from the florist or local supermarket, why not have a look at the flower designs available from Driftwood Designs?

The tradition of Mothering Sunday goes back well over a hundred years to a time when young people would be sent away to work ‘in service’ and rarely saw their families. So, on the fourth Sunday of lent, three weeks before Easter, servants were allowed to return to the ‘mother church’ and visit their own mother at the same time. One of the traditions of the day was to pick wildflowers on the walk back home to give as a Mothering Sunday gift. Much has changed since then but the tradition of giving flowers does not seem to be going anywhere.

The Driftwood Designs offering of beautiful objects was born from Lizzie Spikes’ passion for creating colourful illustrations that can be translated to homewares, cards, prints and more. This means her art can be incorporated into everyday life in the form of practical objects. Her fine art designs cover numerous themes, including countryside and coastal scenes, animals such as sheep and hares, symbols such as hearts and moons and – notably – many designs incorporating flowers.

This means you can treat mum to a flower design that will last far longer than a bunch of fresh flowers and suit budgets from small children’s pocket money up to special treats for grown up children to show their appreciation.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

The essential, of course, and Driftwood has a lovely range of cards with stunning floral designs, starting at prices that won’t be beaten even by tacky supermarket offerings. Choose from the cheery Snowdrops in a Pitcher design, Daisy Beautiful Heart, various daffodil designs and summer flowers, including a bouquet in a vase and a field of sunflowers. Each design is a card to be truly treasured.

If you want something even more special, two designs of large paper flowers cards, actually come with detachable paper flowers that can be put into a small mug or jar, meaning Mum can keep your flowers on the table or windowsill to make her smile each day.

Affordable flower gifts made to last

Being on a budget will not prohibit you from getting a pleasing present with a flower theme for mum. For just £2.25 the Flowers and Bees Small Notebook is illustrated front and back and the perfect size to tuck into mum’s bag, with plenty of blank pages ready for her lists and doodles. Also, for under £5.00, the Harebells Coaster is a real treat and ideal to rest her morning cup of tea or evening tipple.

Moving up slightly in price, the Flowers Make Up / Travel bags are 100% cotton, with lining, and the bold colours are bound to bring a smile to Mum’s face, while also being practical. Equally striking is the Stop and Smell the Flowers Tea Towel, which is fit-for-purpose while bringing a colourful and unique design into the kitchen. Or how about a large Flowers China Mug, with striking illustrations of different blooms on a white background to brighten up any coffee time?
