Helpful Tips for Managing Health Anxiety

health anxiety

Believe it or not, there is a term for worrying too much about your health- it is called health anxiety!

We all have a fear of the unknown to varying degrees, but certain individuals continue fretting over non-existent illnesses. Some fear they may get an illness, while some continue to suspect they already may have one!

This anxiety can become overwhelming if there are any physical symptoms that they can associate with a certain disease or illness. While a certain level of anxiety is normal, too much of it can be counterproductive.

So, if you, too, have health anxiety and have overwhelming negative thoughts about yourself and your loved one’s health, these tips may help!

Learn To Understand Your Body’s Signals

Many times, people misinterpret their normal body sensations as a sign of some disease or illness. People with health anxiety tend to do this more often. For instance, if you feel tired after a workout or your muscles are sore, you may suspect you are coming down with something. Similarly, if you have a headache due to a stressful and long day of work, you may fear something is wrong with the brain.

It is important to understand that most physical sensations are quite normal. Just remember that the body sends signals frequently and these signals are just a reminder that you are alive with a well-functioning body. If you run a mile or climb a flight of stairs quickly and feel your heart rate has increased or you are breathing rapidly, it is all normal. It is a sign that your body is working, and it is not necessarily a signal that something is wrong.

Avoid Researching Your Symptoms Online

If you have health anxiety, you may be googling for even the slightest symptoms. Your anxious mind will always lead you to the worst-case scenarios and will add to your anxiety even more.

Remember that the internet is a useful tool only when you use it wisely. Since the internet has no idea about your health or your family’s health history, it cannot give you an accurate picture. That said, it is important to avoid self-diagnosis. You might be thinking that getting more information about a medical condition may help ease your anxiety. However, it will only make your mental state worse and will make you more anxious.

If you notice a change in your body, it is better to consult your healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and guidance.

Set A Healthy Routine

If you want to keep your health anxiety at bay, it is important to adopt healthy habits and make them a part of your lifestyle. This will help you feel more in control of your health and well-being and will also help you overcome your fear of having an illness or disease.

Be sure to have a balanced diet and an active lifestyle to remain physically fit and healthy. Get proper sleep at night and avoid any distractions that can interfere with your sleep. Also, take good care of your personal hygiene and encourage your family to do the same. Maintain good oral health by brushing regularly with hydroxyapatite toothpaste and using floss and mouthwash regularly.

Once you start following a healthy routine, you will experience an improvement in your mental and physical state. This will help alleviate your stress and reduce negative thoughts as well.

Get Professional Help

At times, the stress and anxiety may get so overwhelming that you may feel it is beyond your control. If you encounter such emotions, it is advised to seek professional help. You can start by reaching out to your healthcare provider.

Get yourself thoroughly checked to rule out the possibility of any physical ailment. Once you have ensured there is nothing wrong with you, think of what lifestyle changes you can make to improve your mental state.

You can practice meditation and reach out to family and friends for support. Your healthcare may also refer you to a behavioral health specialist to help you overcome these overwhelming negative thoughts and anxiety.

Conclusion

While it is natural to be concerned about your health, worrying too much can compromise your mental peace and quality of life. It is important to pay attention to your body and notice any usual changes, but it is equally important not to worry excessively. Avoid making scenarios in your head or searching for your symptoms online. These will only do more harm!

Instead, try to maintain a normal and healthy routine and plan your day so you have something to look forward to. Keep yourself engaged in healthy and productive activities to keep your mind off such doubts and fears. Surround yourself with your loved ones and cherish your time together. Finally, if you feel you need help, do not hesitate to reach out. By doing so, you will be able to protect your mental health and improve your quality of life.
