For the past few days I was feeling bothered. It was one of those annoying experiences because I couldn’t quite put my finger on exactly why I was feeling bothered. Yet, this persistent nagging feeling wouldn’t leave me alone. Has that ever happened to you?
Thankfully today, the bothered feeling has lifted. I love having a blog because it’s an immediate outlet for my thoughts and life experiences. When something affects me, it undoubtedly will be affecting someone else and if I can add insight to the issue then that almost makes the negative experience worthwhile.
How to stop feeling bothered
Sometimes, no matter what you do, feeling bothered will persist. It will lift after a few days but hopefully the next few ideas will help you to stop feeling bothered in a shorter time.
Process of elimination
Write down the things that could possibly be bothering you. For example:
An upcoming interview, a strained relationship with someone or putting on extra weight.
Now, imagine life where you have completed the interview or cancelled the interview. Would that take the bothered feeling away?
Try, the next one, if you made up with the person you are having difficulties with, would you feel back on track?
Carry on with each one on the list and see if this helps to pinpoint the troublesome underlying reason.
The bothered feeling often comes to me when I don’t have much to do. If the process of elimination doesn’t work, it’s time to get busy. Distract yourself and be productive. Often, feeling bothered comes from overthinking. When we focus elsewhere, the nagging feeling disappears automatically.
Do something constructive
Another trigger for feeling bothered can come from feeling you lack control over your life. This is when it is a good idea to focus on what you can control. Can you spring clean your home? Can you improve or pamper yourself – get your hair done/go for a massage?
I got busy tidying up my office and getting stuck in with some overdo admin. This made me feel like I was doing something useful and helped me to feel less bothered.
Ultimately, it may be a combination of all of the above. Usually, whatever we are bothered about will pass. Try not to buy into the nagging thoughts or feelings. Acknowledge that they are there but don’t take them too seriously. They can’t harm you and they really do disappear within a few days (hopefully sooner!)
