Living with a physical disability is far more of a challenge when taking into account that physical restrictions will inevitably affect your general quality of life. Unfortunately, this aspect is often not considered. Because a physical disability will directly impact everyday life and restrict opportunities and capabilities, it is not at all uncommon for those living with disabilities to fall into depression and experience extreme emotional turmoil as a result.

Allowing yourself a period of grief over your physical loss will essentially aid the emotional healing process. It may be human to want to avoid seeming vulnerable to those around you, although, holding onto your anger, hurt, disbelief and sadness will only prolong your recovery period. Learning to cope with your emotions is essential. Depending on your disability insurance policy you may be able to seek professional therapy where you will be able to learn essential coping skills. Rather than convince yourself you are immune to emotional distress, therapy has helped countless individuals struggling with several different challenges.
