After losing her own husband, Lynn Florkiewicz debuts with a mature romance based on her experience

You will meet a stranger book cover

When recently widowed Kerry travels to St Ives, her main reason for visiting is to take the same boat trip that took her late husband’s life in a horrific accident. Accompanied by her fiercely protective teenage son, Dan, Kerry sees the boat trip as the start of her healing process.

But when Kerry meets Italian widower, Gian, this chance encounter releases a cascade of emotions that make her question her immediate choices and her future; not only for herself but also for Dan.

Hers is a story of hope, of digging deep, of finding the strength and resolve to overcome one of the most difficult events in her life – of losing her best friend and soulmate. She discovers that, during her holiday, her coping mechanism is helping Gian, who has his own battles to face.

Lynn Florkiewicz is the Amazon number-one bestselling author of the Lord James Harrington cosy crime books. She has recently completed the authorised biography of Italian actor Rossano Brazzi and is the executive producer of a restored Rossano Brazzi film, We the Living. Lynn lives in Penzance.

Lynn explains: “When my husband suddenly died at 61 years old, I fell into the blackest despair. But, I did something I never thought I would do: I poured my heart out on Facebook. Every day, I told my friends how things were going, how I felt, what my thoughts were etc. The effect was two-fold. One, I felt better for sharing my heartache and my story. Two, I discovered from talking to my friends that this was helping them, too. About two months into this process, several friends were telling me that I should write a book about this when I feel stronger. They were steering me toward a self-help book which didn’t appeal at all.

When I came out of the rawness of grief, I began working on the authorised biography of the late Italian actor, Rossano Brazzi. (Famous, internationally, for his roles in South Pacific, The Italian Job, Three Coins in a Fountain etc). One thing that really struck me was his personality; his sense of fun, his elegance and his charm. I spent over two years living, breathing, eating, sleeping and dreaming this man and, when I finished the biography just a few months ago, I couldn’t get him out of my head.

During my research, it was necessary that I viewed as many of Brazzi’s films as I could. One of those films resonated with me very much: Summertime with Brazzi and Katharine Hepburn. The theme of loneliness, of two older people from different cultures finding love, intrigued me.

At the beginning of 2023, all three of these factors combined. The book that was waiting to come out of me was not a self-help book but a story of a woman who has to cope with the loneliness of being suddenly single and floundering with that status. Kerry, the widow in this book, effectively goes through exactly what I went through. Rossano became Gian, my charming older Italian. I hope it helps others!”
