6 Things You Can Do to Help Prevent Vision Loss

Your eyes are an exceptionally important part of your body. And taking care of your eyes is important for your overall health and quality of life. As we age, our sight may decrease, but there are ways to help prevent some vision loss. Whether you’re looking to prevent blindness or just standard age-related or health-related vision loss, there’s a few tips. Some tips to help prevent vision loss may include:

 

1. Know Your History

As with many health-related issues, it’s important to know your family’s history. If you know your family’s medical history and vision prognosis, it’ll better help you prepare for your own. Determining if you’re at a higher risk for developing an eye issue is a great way to be as vigilant as possible. This will allow you to formulate a plan that helps reduce your vision loss as much as you can.

 

2. Watch Your Diet

It’s no secret that a poor diet can contribute to poor health, including poor eyesight. Eating a diet that is rich in fruits, and vegetables is a great way to get the nutrients your eyes need to stay healthy. This may include spinach, kale, and collard greens. There’s also a benefit from eating fish, as it’s high in omega-3 fatty acids. Some good options are tuna, salmon, and halibut. However, you may also opt for an omega-3 capsule instead as an easy way to get it in should you not be in the mood for fish.

 

3. Watch Your Weight

As you age, you may find yourself undergoing surgery, however, there are ways to help slow or stop your vision loss before cataract surgery becomes required. While cataracts are sometimes genetically more likely, this isn’t always true. Watching your weight is exceptionally helpful when trying to reduce your vision loss. Being overweight or even obese increases your risk of developing diabetes. 

 

You’ll also risk developing other systemic conditions. These conditions can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or even glaucoma. Eating less calories than you output is a great way to lose weight, watch what you eat, while you still can. However, if you do undergo surgery, it’s important to find the right specialist who can help you understand your best options and answer questions like “how long does cataract surgery take” or other concerns you may have.

 

4. Don’t Smoke

Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs, it’s also bad for your eyes. Research has now linked smoking to an increase in developing macular degeneration that is age-related. It’s also been linked to cataract, and optic nerve damage. All these conditions may lead to blindness. Help keep your eyesight from going up in smoke by quitting smoking, or by never starting to smoke in the first place.

 

5. Wear Your Shades

The sun is a powerful source of energy, and while it’s enjoyable to be in, and provides a life source that we all depend on, it’s also dangerous. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can do more than just leave you with a nasty sunburn, it can cause vision loss as well. By wearing sunglasses that protect from both UV-A and UV-B, you’ll be protecting your vision much more proactively, and will be reducing your chance of vision loss. Sunglasses not only look great, but they also serve a much greater purpose! Just make sure that your shades fit well and are suitable for your face.

 

6. Take Rest Seriously

While getting enough sleep is important for your entire body, your eyes also need rest not only from your sleep, but also from screens and strain throughout your day. Take some time to put down the phone and close your eyes for a few minutes. Even just 20 seconds has shown to make a big difference. To remember this easily, follow the 20-20-20 rule. This rule states that every 20 minutes, you should put away devices and look away to about 20 feet in front of you for around 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain that may help perpetuate vision loss, especially as you age, and your eyes weaken.

 

Vision loss is something that many people may have to face. While certain things like genetics may play a large role in the likelihood of developing vision loss, there are still plenty of things that you can do to prevent vision loss from occurring. The most important tool of prevention is to take care of yourself, the better you care for yourself, the better you’ll care for your eyes. See your doctor regularly, and always follow doctor’s orders. Should vision loss still occur, there’s always cataract surgery, while not ideal, it’s still a life-saving option. There’s a lot to see in life, make sure you’re able to by caring for your eyes and your health!
