5 Ways To Cope With Grief

Grief is one of the most powerful forces known to man. If you have recently lost a loved one, you can more than attest to this fact. Some people like to think that life has to have balance to exist, and grief is so intense because it has to balance out the power of love – and we all know how magical love is.

Grief has been best described in the quote below:

“Grief is like glitter.

You can throw a handful of it in the air, but when you try to clean it up, you will never get it all.

Even long after the event, you will still find glitter tucked in the corners. It will always be there…somewhere.”

The only way to deal with grief is to learn to live with it. Below are five ways to help you do this:

  1. Learn To Ride The Wave

As impossible as grief may seem, it does get easier. Grief comes in waves, and if you learn to ride them, it will be easier for you. You must learn to identify when the next wave is rising and find support in those times. Learn to allow those waves to rush over you and then let them go.

  1. Surround Yourself With Love

Being around people you love and people who love you is the only way to get through the worst parts of your grieving journey. We all know that death is a part of life, but until you face that reality head-on, you will never know how it feels.

Grief is life’s most stressful event for the loved ones left behind. Choose your circle of support carefully – you will all be able to lean on each other as you experience a range of emotions together.

  1. Be Patient With Yourself

Grief is exhausting. Be gentle and patient with yourself as you navigate the beginning stages. Take time to take naps if you don’t feel like you can manage a full night’s sleep, eat nourishing foods, and stay hydrated with water or herbal teas.

Avoid stimulants like caffeine and alcohol – these will only harm your process in the long run. If you feel like your grief journey will be easier with a reminder of your loved ones, buy cremation keepsakes and hold them close to your heart.

  1. Grief Is A Cycle

If you reach a point where you start to feel better only to feel bad again, that doesn’t mean that you’re going backwards or you’ve relapsed.

Grief is a series of loops, and sometimes that means that you will circle back to where you were before. Don’t panic when this happens – it is perfectly normal.

  1. Postpone Major Decisions

If possible, postpone major life decisions during the start of your grieving process. Give yourself time to process and grieve and avoid selling your home or starting a new job. You can resume these types of decisions when you feel more like yourself.

To End

Grief is not an easy journey, and it never really ends. Just remember that little by little, we let go of loss…but never love.

Take time to adjust to your loss and learn to live with your new normal.
